NGORA-The Ngora District Mixed Farmers Savings and Credit Cooperative [NDFSC] wants to bolster its agricultural production in the coming season to enable members fight household poverty.
The cooperative, which began in October 2022, has about 15,000 members from both the subcounty and village levels and started with saving. Membership fee ranges from 500 -2000 while members can save Shs 500 and above.
Besides savings and credit, the cooperative also engages in, livestock, poultry, and fish farming but would like to add more agricultural enterprises.
While addressing members of the cooperative on Sunday, Ngora district Woman Member of Parliament, Stella Apolot said Ngora district has fertile soils for growing maize, sorghum, groundnuts, and soybeans in bulk.
“We want to grow grains mainly, maize and sorghum,” Apolot said, adding that they would need storage facilities for their produce. “We need a storage facility to be sure what we produce is safe,” she added.
Stephen Epau, the chairperson of Eastern Kyoga Multipurpose Cooperative society [EKMCS] in Serere district who attended the meeting told the farmers to first erect temporary structures to act as storage facilities as they await government support.
Epau advised the cooperative’s members to register among farmers who want to grow yellow maize come next season, saying there is already market.
He encouraged the cooperative’s farmers to maximise production through use of fertilisers.
Johnson Odeke, a member of NDFSC supported the idea of growing yellow maize and urged other members to embrace the initiative.
