KAMPALA, January 17, 2025 –– President Yoweri Museveni has urged traditional and cultural leaders in Uganda to continue promoting local languages and conveying messages of socio-economic transformation to their communities.
He stated that in recognition of the vital roles these leaders play, the government has decided to increase their monthly allowances to support the preservation and promotion of local languages, eliminate harmful cultural practices, and spread messages of wealth creation and socio-economic empowerment within communities.
In a speech delivered by Betty Amongi, the Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, during the official opening of the national conference for traditional and cultural leaders at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala yesterday.
Museveni explained that the government has donated vehicles to traditional leaders to ease their mobility while carrying out their duties.
The theme of the conference was “The Role of Traditional and Cultural Leaders in the Promotion of Culture for Socio-Economic Development in Uganda”.
He added that the government is building palaces where they do not yet exist to ensure that leaders have decent accommodation, with more transport provisions to follow.
Furthermore, Museveni reassured the leaders that the government will continue to provide security to them.
“This platform for traditional and cultural leaders to engage with government agencies should propose further actions required to strengthen and solidify the partnerships between the government and traditional or cultural institutions, enabling you to contribute more meaningfully to the socio-economic transformation of the Republic of Uganda,” he said.
He also stated that there is growing evidence that sustainable development can only be achieved by harnessing Uganda’s rich cultural values and fostering resilient, strong partnerships, which are essential for achieving Vision 2040, Africa’s Agenda 2063, and the Sustainable Development Goals [Agenda 2030].
