MP Akugizibwe urges voters to secure land

MASINDI–  The Member of Parliament for Buruli County in Masindi district, Aled Ronald Akugizibwe has advised his electorate to acquire land titles for their land, it would help them fight land grabbers.

“If you are to protect your land from land grabbers, then you should have a land title. Many people have lost land to land grabbers because they have no land titles,” Akugizibwe said.

The MP was addressing the locals on Monday during the official launch of the construction of a 6.1-kilometre Isimba- Kitooka road at a cost of Shs 36 million in Miirya Sub-county.

He added that most people are ignorant about the processes followed to acquire land titles, noting that he would sensitise his people to acquire the land titles.

“I am going to work hand in hand with the district land officials to sensitise you on the due processes followed. This is going to be done at the parish level across the six sub-counties and two town councils,” he explained.

Most of the people in Masindi district own land under the customary tenure system and few people have no land titles.

Akugizibwe further cautioned the residents against recklessly selling land but rather use it productively.

“Stop selling land. One of the things we should not sell is land. People have recklessly sold land and remained with nothing, which is very bad. Let us use our land for commercial production,” he said.

MP Akugizibwe added: “The beginning of poverty is the lack of food in a home. We should use the resource of land to change our lives because selling it is not sustainable.”

Cosmas Byaruhanga, the Masindi district LCV chairperson advised the residents to refocus their efforts towards educating their children, explaining that Miirya Sub-county is one of the sub-counties in the district with few educated people.

He further advised the people in Miirya Sub-county to identify a crop that they can grow as their main cash crop.

Commenting on the issue of the poor road network in the area, which was raised by Bright Tibiganbwa the district councilor, Byaruhanga noted that much as they have the will to improve the roads, the meagre resources cannot allow them to do.

“The money coming to the district, especially for roads is too little. We have over 400 kilometres of roads to maintain but we receive only Shs 500 million every financial year.  We are going to continue lobbying for more money,” he said.

Emmy Ngabirano, the resident district commissioner Masindi also urged the residents of Miirya Sub-county to embrace government programmes such as the Parish Development Model [PDM] if they are to transform their lives.
