More women urged to join PDM

LIRA-The Lira Resident City Commissioner, Lawrence Egole, has urged more women to join the Parish Development Model [PDM], a programme aimed at moving households trapped in the subsistence economy to the money economy.

Speaking during the belated International Women’s Day celebrations on Friday at Lira Town College, Egole noted that many PDM SACCOs are dominated by men.

“Many women are not taking advantage of the PDM and other government programmes such as Emyooga and Operation Wealth Creation [OWC]. I appeal to you to wake up; otherwise, you will continue being ruled by men economically,” he said.

The programme also emphasises agricultural value-chain development to increase commercial production, financial inclusion, among others.

Egole urged men to allow their wives to join the programme, saying women are the bedrock and foundation of development in the family.

Under PDM, each of the 10,594 parishes in the country is expected to receive Shs 100 million every financial year to operationalise the Parish Revolving Fund [PRF] as one way of empowering communities to engage in commercial enterprises such as coffee growing, piggery, and poultry keeping, among others.

Lira City and other districts in the Lango Sub-region, which include Dokolo, Amolatar, Apac, Apac Municipality, Kwania, Oyam, Kole, Lira, Otuke, and Alebtong, have so far received Shs 19 billion to fund a total of 582 PDM SACCOs.

The Lira City East Division MP, Jimmy Akena, who is also the President of the Uganda People’s Congress, was the chief guest at the celebrations.

MP Akena cautioned men against battering their wives, saying they should instead work together in the upbringing of children.
