Minister Nabakooba cautions Oyam against land fragmentation
OYAM- The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Judith Nabakooba has advised the people of Oyam district against land fragmentation, saying it affects large-scale agricultural production.
Handing over 2000 certificates of freehold land titles at Apworocero Primary School in Minakulu town council days ago, Nabakooba urged the people to embrace commercial agriculture, saying it will not only transform their households.
The land titles processed under the Systematics Land Adjudication Certificate funded by the World Bank will curb land rows in Oyam district which like other districts in Lango Sub-region was affected by the insurgency caused by Josephy Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army [LRA].
Three months ago, President Yoweri Museveni launched the issuing of land titles in Apac district, a ceremony that saw a total of 1,537 certificates issued to families in the three districts of Agago, Maracha, and Apac.
The project funded by European Union, United Nations Capital Development Fund and CADASTA was expected to roll out and cover 35 districts in the country.
“I want to thank the ministry of lands for waking up from sleeping because land conflict and grabbing has been a big problem in this country,” Museveni was quoted as saying in Apac during the handover.
According to the police report of January and May 2021, Lango Sub-region registered 92 murder cases related to land disputes.
The sub-region spans nine districts of Alebtong, Oyam, Lira, Kwania, Kole, Dokolo, Apac, Otuke, and Amolatar. The population views land as the only source of earning a livelihood through farming and livestock keeping.
Minister Nabakooba urged the residents to protect their land since they have now acquired land title, urging them further to engage in production.
Amongi congratulated the ministry of lands for processing the land titles for the people of Oyam South.
She said the programme under the World Bank started five years ago with the aim to protect poor families from land grabbers. Poor families can also use land titles to secure loans for production.
