Minister dissolves Soroti Main Market leadership over corruption

SOROTI – The Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has dissolved the leadership of Soroti Main Market in Soroti City over corruption tendencies.

During his tour of the market on Friday, Magyezi asked the town clerk to appoint new market leaders to ensure transparency and accountability in the market.

“Appoint the allocation committee in accordance with the law and make sure there is no double allocation,” the minister said.

According to the minister, the previous committee was corrupt and therefore ordered the arrest of some of the market leaders.

Among those arrested include the principal community development officer, Damali Asekenye, Richard Opiding, chairperson allocation committee, George Tukei, the commercial officer, and Badru Ochengel, the acting town clerk, Soroti City East Division.

Others are George William Iriebat, chairperson vendors, Benjamin Ocaro member in the clearing committee.

The minister ordered the arrests after over 50 vendors lodged to the Office of Speaker of Parliament complaints of exorbitant rental charges, bribery, and misallocation of lockups among others.

Harriet Mteitiei, a vendor in the market said there is a need to reorganise the market vendors.

Richard Opiding, chairperson allocation committee said they managed to allocate 278 lockups in the market to the vendors while 86 were still closed pending discussions with the management team for allocation.

Soroti Main Market which was commissioned in November 2020 is made up of 364 lockups and 84 poultry cages among other units.
