Local Leaders Eye Increased Coffee Production, Join Cooperatives

Sub-county chairpersons in Busia district have formed a cooperative to engage in coffee production and processing. The Busia District Lower Local Leaders Cooperative Society Limited has already been registered and issued with a certificate by the ministry of cooperatives.

Humphreys Maloba the chairpersons of the cooperative also the Masaba sub-county chairpersons said, Julius Maganda the state minister for East African Community Affairs also Member of Parliament Samia Bugwe south is the patron of the cooperative. The cooperative, Maloba said, is aimed at helping leaders to lead by example, wean residents from the fear of forming cooperatives, in addition to boosting coffee production in the district.

All the sub-county, town council and division chairpersons in the district and the area district woman member of Parliament Jane Nabulindo Kwoba are members of the cooperative. They have already written to President Yoweri Museveni requesting for shillings 300 million, a truck for transporting coffee and the value addition equipment.

“We are set to begin work any time because we already have some money on our account,” he noted. The membership is currently limited to sub-county chairpersons but in the future, it will be open to members of the general public.
