Lango youth leaders ask govt to create more jobs

LIRA-Youth leaders in the Lango sub-region have asked the government to create more job opportunities for the young people if they are to stop looking for employment in Arab countries where some have ended up being mistreated and killed.

The Northern Youth MP Boniface Okot said some foreign countries that have not signed a formal bilateral agreement with Uganda, have had their nationals and companies mistreat Ugandans, especially domestic workers.

“As youth legislators, we are working on formulating the Labour Externalization Bill seeking to stop recruitment of Ugandans to work in the foreign countries without an agreement with the government,” he said.

Okot was days ago addressing youth council leaders, councilors and the National Resistance Movement Youth League in a meeting organised by National Democratic Institute and Uganda Parliamentary Forum on Youth Affairs.

The Lira district youth council chairperson Sodrick Ogwang attributed the influx of Ugandans to other countries especially the Middle East to unemployment, poor pay, and weak laws in the country.

Cases of abuse of Ugandan domestic workers ferried to the Middle East have been on the increase. The abuses include; denial of access to adequate medical services, incomplete or non-payment of wages and denial of access to telephones for communication with people back home.

Other forms of abuses reported include denial of access to the internet, confiscation of identification documents, torture and others.

Such concerns prompted the Government of Uganda and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to reach an agreement where Uganda will have the authority to suspend Saudi Arabian labour companies that abuse the contractual obligations and rights of Ugandan migrant workers.

Calvin Opolot, the chairperson youth council of Amolatar district said the mistreatment of Ugandans in the Middle East countries is unbearable and that the government should arrest the situation.

The leaders were drawn from the districts of Apac, Lira, Dokolo, Amolatar, Kwania, Kole, Oyam, Alebtong, Otuke, and Lira City.

They resolved that the youth livelihood programme should be retained and also government should allocate more slots in parliament for the youth.
