Lango, Teso communities urged to jointly fight poverty to improve livelihoods
LIRA CITY, September 28, 2026 — The local communities of Lango and Teso have been urged to join hands in the fight against poverty by increasing production and embracing initiatives aimed at improving household incomes and livelihoods.
The call was made recently by the Paramount Chief of Lango [Won Nyaci me Lango], Eng. Moses Odongo Okune, at the Uganda Christian Institute in Lira City during a cultural gala presided over by the Paramount Chief [Emorimor] of Teso Cultural Union, Paul Sande Emolot.
Odongo said the two communities face a common challenge of poverty, which he said had continued to hinder development in the two sub-regions.
“I join Papa Emorimor in underscoring the common origins that we share. We face similar challenges with Teso, including environmental problems, youth unemployment and social issues such as drug abuse, domestic violence and land fragmentation. We have a lot to learn from each other through benchmarking,” Odongo said.
He urged the people of Lango and Teso to identify poverty as a common enemy and work together to overcome it.
“I want to encourage the Teso community, through Papa Emorimor, and the people of Lango to define a common enemy — poverty. Let us work together to drive poverty out of our communities,” he said.
Odongo called on the two cultural communities to increase their efforts in production and other economic activities to improve the livelihoods of their people.
“Teso and Lango, do not sleep; wake up and fight poverty mercilessly so that we can chase it out of our beautiful communities. It is already an enemy, and if we agree that it is our common enemy, which we all hate, let us mount a sustained assault against it and make the lives of our people better,” Odongo said.
He also commended President Yoweri Museveni for what he described as efforts to fight poverty among Ugandan households, urging people in Lango and Teso to embrace government programmes aimed at improving household incomes.
“I want to thank the President [Museveni] very much for being at the forefront of the fight against poverty in Uganda. He has given us the Parish Development Model [PDM] and other programmes through which beneficiaries receive funds to engage in income-generating activities. He is restocking Lango and Teso with cattle and supporting our young people with skills. He is doing a lot,” Odongo said.
For his part, the Emorimor commended Odongo and called for closer cooperation between the two cultural institutions to improve the living standards of their people.
“I would like to commend you, the Paramount Chief of Lango. Let us work together and make sure our people improve their lives. If we put our hands together to fight poverty, which is a common enemy, the people of Lango and Teso will make progress,” Emolot said.
