Lango Sub-region: Cooperative distributes seeds to farmers

KOLE, April 2, 2024 – As the new planting season starts, the Alito Joint Farmers’ Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited in Alito Sub-county, Kole district has kicked off distributing soybean and simsim seeds to seed multipliers in the Lango Sub-region.

Speaking to this reporter, the Executive Director of the Cooperative, Rev John Christopher Okwang disclosed that they are targeting 250 seed multipliers mainly in Kole, Oyam, and Kwania districts.

He said they would give 3,500 kilogrammes including beans and green grams to the beneficiary members.

According to Okwang, the Cooperative has signed an agreement with the farmers to procure the produce from the farmers as soon as it is harvested.

He added that they expect over 50 tonnes of quality seeds from the farmers after proper inspection and certification by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF].

He added that farmers in Lango Sub-region like planting the seeds provided by the Cooperative because of their quality that enables germination to take place.

He added: “Farmers like our seeds because we follow all the procedures that ensure quality and high yields.”

Okwang added that their members have become prosperous through growing soybeans and sunflowers since they are more rewarding compared to other crops.

“We are expanding to other seeds like beans, simsim and green grams,” he added.

Some of the farmers talked to appreciated the Cooperative for providing good quality seeds, which, according to them, have minimised losses since the germinate rate id almost 100 percent.

“When we plant these seeds provided by our cooperative [ Alito Joint Farmers’ Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited], they always germinate,” a farmer in Kole district told this reporter on condition of anonymity.

Alito Joint Farmers’ Multipurpose Cooperative Society Limited started in 1998 with only five members but has since grown to 16,015 registered members.
