Kasese RDC Walusimbi threatens to arrest Emyooga fund defaulters

KASESE – The Kasese resident district commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi has warned Emyooga fund defaulters to either refund the money or face arrest.

Walusimbi who was speaking during the annual general meeting of Emyooga leaders on Monday at Verina Gardens in Kasese town, said he will not leave government money in the hands of bad debtors.

“This money was meant for improving people’s income and see them come out of poverty but when people start defaulting it means it won’t serve the required purpose. This is a revolving fund not a token of appreciation from government,” Walusimbi said.

He appealed to all Emyooga SACCO members who took the loans to use it for the required purpose and pay the loans back so that it can benefit all members in their respective associations.

The Kasese Municipality deputy mayor Rebson Mupango described Emyooga Programme as a dream come true that the local leaders and community members should popularise to meet the required target.

Mupango said leaders need to work together to ensure Emyooga programme succeeds and benefits the target population.

“Poverty is one of the deadly diseases that cause insecurity, we need to ensure that we use this program to fight poverty and as well end insecurity,” he said.

Hanifa Kamatara, secretary and member of the Hotel Owners Omwooga SACCO commended government for bringing the programme and considering them.

She also appealed to fellow Emyooga members especially those who took loans to pay back so that it can also benefit their colleagues.

In Kasese Municipality alone, Microfinance Support Centre [MSC] disbursed Shs 680 million for Emyooga SACCOs.

The objective of the Emyooga Programme is to facilitate the transformation of the 68.90 of households still stuck at subsistence towards the money economy and market-oriented production.

Launched in 2019, Emyooga Programme targets boda boda operators, women entrepreneurs, carpenters, salon operators, taxi operators, and restaurant owners.

Others are; welders, market vendors, youth leaders, persons with disabilities, produce dealers, mechanics, tailors, journalists, performing artists, veterans, fishermen, elected local leaders and journalists.
