Hoima City street vendors demand market structure
HOIMA, November 7, 2023 – Street vendors operating on pavements and walkways in Hoima West Division in Hoima City have demanded that the city authorities build them a market structure where they can relocate.
The vendors operating at Duhaga roundabout are part of the group who were evicted from an existing market owned by businessman Francis Kabambe after the Hoima City Council failed to pay him his rent arrears last year.
William Musiguzi, the chairperson of the vendors, said over 400 of them have been operating on the streets uncomfortably for almost two years now without any help.
He said they have no shelter to keep their merchandise, adding that they suffer during the rainy and sunny days.
“As vendors we need to have a marketplace where we can operate for at least 40 years and work without interruption, because we operate in the open, and have no security,” he said.
Jenifer Kimuli, another vendor selling foodstuffs called on Hoima City authorities to expedite the process of building them a market.
He noted that as division leaders, they have no other option but to allow the vendors to continue operating on the streets until the central government secures funds to buy land where they can establish a market.
Brian Kaboyo, the Hoima City mayor said that currently the city has nowhere to relocate the vendors adding that the vendors will continue operating on the roadside until when they secure land for them.
He noted that they need an acre of land at a cost Shs 1 billion, to establish the market for the vendors.
