Granite to create 1,000 jobs for youths in Lira
LIRA – Universal Granite and Marble, an international company is establishing a tile factory at Barapwo parish in Lira City, west division.
The factory will employ 1,000 young people directly and 500 indirectly in the commercial and industrial city according to the Indian High Commission.
The Division Mayor, Micheal Ogwal Achonga says the granite factory will create employment opportunities for the youth and the area residents.
“We welcome them because we wanted more of these investors to come and set up factories here,” says Ogwal.
Three months ago, the company launched the construction at Anyolo cell, located 8 kilometers west of Lira City.
Currently, it is busy clearing the site and ferry in materials to kick start the construction. The factory will be housed in over 40 acres of land near Olaka primary school.
The area LC1, Moses Ogwal expressed excitement over the development but sounded a stern warning to the investors against sidelining the area community capable of providing labor.
“We welcome the project but I am requesting them (Universal Granite and Marble) not to ferry their people here because the community in this area are ready to work,” Ogwal says.
He also adds his voice on Achonga`s take saying, they were yearning for more factories and investors to provide employment for the redundant youth in the area.
During the ground breaking ceremony in June, the Indian High Commissioner, Jay Kumar, said the cooperation between Uganda and India would still continue.
The granite factory secured licenses for mining in Lira, Soroti, Gulu, Nwoya, Amuru, Nakasongola, Mukono, Koboko, and Kyegegwa. The investment is amounting to 5 million US dollars.
“This is another example of cooperation between India and Uganda,” he was quoted saying in the ceremony officiated by Minister of Health, Dr Jane Aceng.
Mike Okello, a resident of Kakooge village said that the rate of crime in the area was high because of idleness and redundancy among youth.
Lira City Mayor, Sam Atul says, by establishing this in the area, they were in the process of changing personal lives because hundreds of people will be working at the factory to support their families.
