Gov’t to increase scholarships for students with disabilities

KOLE - As part of affirmative action, government is committed to increasing the number of scholarships for students with disabilities so that they join higher institutions of learning such as universities.

The Vice President, Jesca Alupo said through the Ministry of Education and Sports, government will increase scholarships for disabled students from 64 to 320 in the next three years.

Alupo disclosed the latest development while officiating at the International Day for Persons with Disabilities [PWDs] at Okole Primary School in the Kole district on Saturday.

“We shall enable many more students with disabilities who would ordinarily not join tertiary institutions to access tertiary education,” she said.

She added that statistics from the Uganda National Examination Board [UNEB] indicate an average of 30 percent increase in the completion rates at primary, ordinary and advanced levels among learners with disabilities over the last three years.

She said there is also need to empower parents with disabled children to access surgeries and other services through child disability grant.

“I want to inform the disability fraternity that government is building the capacity of hospitals to do more specialised surgeries to handle some of the complex disability conditions, especially for children,” she added.

Alupo also launched the Braille version of the 1995 Constitution, revised national policy for PWDs, the audio-visual versions of PWDs Act and comprehensive report on albinism situation in Uganda.
