Saving the environment: Serere locals urged to plant more trees

SERERE, February 13, 2024 – Emmanuel Omoding, the Serere County Member of Parliament has urged residents in Serere district to plant more trees, saying this would help to save the environment from further destruction.

He made the remarks during the belated National Resistance Movement [NRM]celebrations that were held at Serere district headquarters on February 9, 2024.

Omoding said that too much use of firewood as energy for cooking is responsible for the disappearance of trees in the district. “We have cut off all the trees for cooking leaving the environment bare, we therefore need to start planting trees,” he said.

He pledged to get the farmers seeds that are drought resistant and also ensure that Serere district gets a breeding centre to breed animals are resistant to diseases.

Omoding further said  locals in area will soon get connected to electricity free of charge, saying it will boost businesses, hence bringing development to the district.

He pledged to contribute some money so that people are connected to the national electricity grid.

Richard Todwong, NRM Secretariat who graced the celebrations applauded women for being agents of fighting poverty in the country.” You are the biggest partners we have in fighting household poverty,” he said.

Todwong said that the NRM government is focused on fighting household poverty, adding that saying development is only seen in the society once families are productive.” When families are disintegrated, and are engulfed in poverty the country is also disturbed,” he said.

He urged the locals to embrace government programmes which are aimed at solving challenges associated with poverty.

Minister of State for Fisheries, Hellen Adoa cautioned individuals against divisionism in Serere, especially in the NRM party, urging them to embrace unity in order to achieve development.
