CAIRO, July 5, 2026 — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development [EBRD] and the European Union [EU] have marked the successful completion of a water conservation awareness campaign delivered as part of the Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme in Egypt.
The closing ceremony was held in Kafr El Sheikh and brought together senior representatives from the EBRD, the EU, national authorities and local stakeholders to celebrate the campaign’s achievements and engage with participating communities.
The initiative reached around 2,000 students across the governorates of Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbeya and Dakahleya, promoting water conservation, efficient water use and sustainable environmental practices.
The campaign forms part of the wider Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme, a joint initiative by the EBRD, the European Investment Bank [EIB] and the EU aimed at improving environmental conditions and living standards for around six million people in the Nile Delta.
Mark Davis, EBRD Managing Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, said the Bank was pleased to work with the European Union and its Egyptian partners to promote more sustainable water use across the Nile Delta.
“Through the Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme, we are combining investment in vital environmental infrastructure with community engagement and awareness-raising,” he said.
Davis added that by reaching around 2,000 students, the campaign was helping to foster a culture of responsible water use while supporting the long-term sustainability of the programme’s investments.
Angelina Eichhorst, EU Ambassador to Egypt and the League of Arab States, said the European Union supported practical initiatives that connected infrastructure investment with people’s everyday lives.
“Our collaboration with the EBRD, the EIB and Egyptian partners is addressing environmental challenges in the Nile Delta, including promoting more sustainable water use for more than six million residents across the governorates of Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbeya and Dakahleya through the Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme,” she said.
Eichhorst said the active involvement of local communities, particularly young people and students from diverse backgrounds, would help transform water conservation from a technical issue into a shared responsibility.
The programme featured presentations on the campaign’s achievements, student-led performances and interactive activities, followed by discussions with students and members of the local community.
Egypt is a founding member of the EBRD. Since 2012, the Bank has invested more than €14.6 billion in 227 projects across the country.
