Development programmes: Bunyoro clerics urged to mobilise masses

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has urged religious leaders in Bunyoro Sub-region to mobilise the faithful so that they participate in government’s development programmes aimed at eradicating household poverty as well as creating wealth.

In his message that was delivered by the state Minister for works and transport Fred Byamukama, Tayebwa said clerics should also incorporate the message of social-economic transformation as they preach the word of God to the masses.

Tayebwa had been invited to officiate at the fundraising event to raise the money needed to complete the construction of St Matthew Church of Uganda in Kyangwali sub-county in Kikuube district, as well as buy the vicar’s vehicle.

He said that there is a need for religious leaders to mobilise the locals to embrace government programmes such as the Parish Development Model [PDM], Emyooga, and Operation Wealth Creation [OWC].

He noted that though such development programmes are intended to help Ugandans to move out of poverty, some citizens have not fully utilised them.

The Deputy Speaker said there is a need to double efforts in popularising such government programmes to ensure that people benefit and move out of poverty, adding that religious leaders have a big role to play in mobilising the citizens to embrace government programmes to see that they get deliberated from poverty.

Minister Byamukam commended Christians for supporting God’s work and contributed Shs 5 million and handed over Tayebwa’s contribution of Shs 10mln.

Meanwhile, Minister Byamukama appealed to religious leaders to encourage their Christians to embrace hard work to be able to improve their social-economic status.

He also reminded the religious leaders to mobilize their followers to prepare for the upcoming oil and gas opportunities by engaging in modern farming which will help them to produce enough food to supply the industry.

The function was attended by over 20 Members of Parliament on the invitation of Florence Natumanya the Kikuube District Woman MP who was the chief mobiliser of the fundraising which raised over Shs 60mln in cash and pledges

Natumanya urged religious leaders in Kikuube district to advocate for reconciliation among the leaders. She expressed dismay over the continued disunity among the leaders, saying it is affecting service delivery in the district.

The MP further urged clerics to join the political leaders in the fight against corruption which she said is affecting service delivery.

Michael Ayeranga, the National NRM mobiliser for Bunyoro, urged parents to invest in the education of their children so that they can benefit from the oil and gas sector expected to boost the development of the region.

He says that the oil and gas sector requires skilled labour, adding that if Banyoro fails to prepare in time, the opportunities will be grabbed by outsiders.

Rv. Canon William Sakwezi, the Vicar of St Matthew Parish said that they are preparing the parish to be turned into an Archdeaconry.

He said that finishing the church, buying the vehicle, and constructing the vicar’s house are some of the conditions that they have to fulfill before granting the Parish Archdeaconry status.
