Cooperator named Busia LC 5 chairman

Busia district has elected an independent candidate Geoffrey Wandera as new district chairperson.

Wandera a veteran cooperator, belongs to Busia district union of disabled persons (PWDS) which also runs a cooperative for disabled persons.

Wandera is also an experienced politician who has served thrice as male district councilor for PWDS and as district speaker during his last term of office from 2011- 2015.

Speaking to the Cooperator after being declared as elected unopposed district chairperson by area returning officer Umar Kiyimba on Monday morning, Wandera said, he will lobby for cooperatives in the district to empower them as channels for fighting poverty.

“I will source for funds and avail it to cooperatives so that they can give loans at low-interest rates to people to fight poverty,” Wandera said.

Through this system he noted, unemployed youths will be able to acquire loans buy motorcycles and engage in production without selling land to buy motorcycles as the case has been.

He vowed to handle with iron handle people that swindle cooperators savings and generally those that abuse funds meant for service delivery to the members of the public in the district.

Wandera further added that whoever tries to frustrate the cooperatives in the district will be considered as an enemy to his administration and the people of Busia.

He pledged to ensure that the district council plans and allocate some money however small it is to cooperatives to enable them to cater for their day to day running of their businesses.

Wandera was declared a winner after the electoral commission EC on Friday disqualification the NRM’s candidate Boniface Paul Oguttu and Hasubi Deogratias Njoki the joint opposition candidate from the race.

Tonny Ojambo and Crispus Bwire the independent candidates that had remained, withdraw from the race on the same day leaving Wandera unopposed.
