Cooperative Symposium to be held in Lira City

KAMPALA – A Cooperative Symposium is to be held in Lira City on June 30, 2023, as part of the activities of the Cooperative Week that happens before the celebration of International Day of Cooperatives on July 1, 2023, this news website understands.

International Cooperative Day is an annual celebration of the cooperative movement observed on the first Saturday in July since 1923 by the International Cooperative Alliance.

However, the Cooperative Symposium to be held under the theme, “Cooperatives for Sustainable Development” which is also the global theme to mark the 101 International Day of Cooperatives, is being organised by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives [MTIC] in partnership with Uganda Cooperative Alliance [UCA]Limited, Walimu Cooperative Union and Lango Cooperative Union.

Also the national celebrations mark International Day of Cooperatives will be held in Lira City in Lango Sub-region which is home to Lango Cooperative Union which is co-hosting the celebrations alongside Walimu SACCOs Union whose members are mainly teachers.

MTIC and UCA are also the lead organisers of the national celebrations to mark this year’s International Day of Cooperatives, in partnership with The Uhuru Institute for Social Development [TUI], a social business enterprise that works to strengthen cooperatives in Uganda so that are able to create wealth and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.

Meanwhile, according to the official programme, the permanent secretary MTIC, Geraldine Ssali speak at the symposium on the relevance of the theme for the 2023 International Day of Cooperatives.

Others expected to address participants at the symposium include Leonard Okello, the CEO TUI who will speak about the role of cooperative identity in developing sustainable development of cooperatives in Uganda.

Eric Obila, the managing director, CIC [provides insurance services], will talk about what the Government of Uganda can do to effectively support cooperatives to deliver sustainable development.

The Budadiri West Member of Parliament and chairman of Bugisu Cooperative Union [BCU] is expected to talk about the need for strategic partnerships that can foster sustainable development of cooperatives in Uganda.

Maruzi County Member of Parliament, Maxwell Akora who doubles as the chairperson of Lango Cooperative Union will also speak to an audience drawn from across Uganda.

Stephen Nabende, the chairman of Walimu SACCOs, Gen. Sam Kavuma, chairman of Wazalendo SACCO, and Dr. Graceline Akongo, senior research officer Ngetta ZARDI, NARO, among others will be one of the discussants of the topics of the symposium.

Several organisations and companies will make presentations during the function. They include; CIC, MTN Uganda, Equity Bank Uganda, USAID, GNUgrid, Bank of Uganda and Payroll Consults Africa [PCA].

According to the programme, the Minister of State for Cooperatives is expected close the symposium sponsored by MTN Uganda, Equity Bank Uganda, Wazelendo SACCO, Bank of Uganda, Police Exodus SACCO, CIC Group, gnuGrid, and FeedFuture.

Last year’s Cooperative Symposium and International Day of Cooperatives were held in Mbarara City and Sheema Municipality, respectively.

Meanwhile, with the slogan Cooperatives for Sustainable Development, more than a billion cooperators worldwide will celebrate this year’s International Day of Cooperatives that has marked cooperativism for a century. “To honour the occasion, we’re holding an international conference to show how cooperatives are the best tool we have for building a better future, offering sustainable development for all,” says the International Cooperative Alliance [ICA].

The Cooperatives for Sustainable Development conference will take place on July 1, 20223, at Donostia-San Sebastián City Hall [Spain] with online broadcasts that can be followed in Spanish, English and Basque.

The dynamic format of the event will showcase experiences and testimonies from across the world, both in-person and online. There will be six round tables in which representatives from various countries and organisations will discuss the relationship between the cooperative movement and each of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The aim of #CoopsDay is to increase awareness of cooperatives and promote the movement’s ideas of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace. Since 1995, the ICA and the United Nations through the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives [COPAC] have jointly set the theme for the celebration of #CoopsDay.
