Govt commits Shs 2bln to rehabilitate Kiryandongo road

KIRYANDONGO – Residents of different villages in Kiryandongo Sub-county, Kiryandongo district are now relieved after government provided Two Billion Shillings to rehabilitate a local road.

The 20-kilometre Kiryandongo-Kitwara road had spent two decades without being rehabilitated due to limited funding from Uganda Road Fund.

The road now being constructed by Apomu International Limited is expected to boost commerce in the area once completed.

According to Edith Aliguma Adyeri, the district chairperson LCV, they don’t receive enough funds from the central government to maintain roads.

He said the latest funds from government were received after district council prioritised it for funding under the Development Response to Displacement Impact Project [DRDIP].

“I applaud the previous council for prioritising this road [Kiyandongo-Kitwara road] as well as the current council for ensuring that funds are provided to construct the road. I also urge the contractor to stick to the bills of quantities to ensure quality work.

Dan Muganga, the resident district commissioner Kiryandongo implored the community to take advantage of the road being rehabilitated to engage in commercial farming.

“Infrastructure cannot bring money into the pockets of the people but it is an enabler for wealth creation. You must do something which will go through this road to the market, that is when you will fight poverty,” said Muganga.

“We were finding it hard to access social services like the market, schools, and health centres because the road had become impassable,” said excited James Aleku, a resident of Kitara village.
