The Busia district chairperson Geoffrey Wandera has pledged total support towards the development of cooperatives in the area.
Wandera said his administration is exploring partnership in the areas of knowledge sharing, technical training as well as marketing to enable farmers to get the best out of their sweat.
The recently elected district boss was speaking to the Cooperator Magazine in an exclusive interview.
” As you are aware I came into office after the budget was passed,” he said, adding that he will ensure that the coming budget allows a special vote, however small it is to cooperatives.
The partnership, he said, seeks to develop cooperatives through building capacities of agribusiness service cooperatives and producer organizations through business advisory services including training based on needs.
The impact is to promote the growth of agriculture, assist farmers to access credit facilities, market information, technical management, training for agricultural entrepreneur cooperatives and agriculture storage facilities.
He said cooperatives have greatly improved lives of residents in the neighboring Busia, Kenya Country, and Kenya at large noting he wants to see the same thing happening in Busia district.
He emphasized the need for capacity building saying many cooperatives have been started countrywide but collapsed in a short period because of the cooperators lacking knowledge of how to run them.
