Bishop Kisembo urges Christians to embrace commercial farming

KABAROLE – The Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese, Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo has appealed to all Christians in the country to embrace commercial farming if they want to join the money economy said to provide a better life compared to the subsistence economy which features poverty.

Bishop Kisembo said the commercial production of crops like coffee, tea, fruits, cocoa, vanilla, and engaging in dairy farming, piggery, and others can improve household incomes.

“When you have different avenues of getting money, especially through commercial agriculture, you can obviously improve household income. Whether you have a small piece of land you can still practice commercial farming,” he said.

He was speaking to Christians during a recent fundraiser to roof Nyanswiga Church of Uganda in Kabarole district.

Kisembo urged the Christians to engage in serious work saying most government programmes are meant to supplement what people already have to fight poverty.

“As Christians, we need to follow the footsteps of Joseph, the worker as told in the Bible. Let us all work hard and improve our household income others will come later,” he said.

The Minister of State for Local Government, Victoria Businge Rusoke encouraged people to work saying those who don’t want to work will always miss out on government programmes meant to improve the livelihoods of the citizens.

“Government is trying tirelessly to ensure we get out of poverty but we also need to have something for government to supplement it,” she said.

She cited the Parish Development Model [PDM] which is being implemented saying it is meant to benefit the hard-working citizens, not the lazy ones.

“How do you want government to help you when you can’t help yourself? Let’s not tire government, let’s have something and we shall all be able to get out of poverty,” she noted.

She rallied the general public to embrace government programmes so that they can all move at the same pace.

Rusoke said government programmes like the PDM, Emyooga Programme, Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme, and Youth Livelihood Programme among others are here to stay and help Ugandans enjoy the fruits of their sweat.

The Kabarole district LCV chairperson, Richard Rwabuhinga urged the people of Kabarole and the entire country to stop politicising government programmes aimed at helping people to create wealth.

He warned those who want to fail any of the government programmes that they will be arrested and be tried in courts of law.
