ARUA: RCC threatens to deport South Sudanese fishmongers over violence

ARUA, January 12, 2024 – Ham Muzamil Ezama, the Arua Deputy Resident City Commissioner [RCC] in charge of the Central Division has threatened to deport South Sudanese fishmongers over engaging in violent fights.

Ezama warned that if the Sudanese continue with the violence/ fights in the fish market, and abide by the laws of Uganda, his office will be left with no option but to take deportation steps.

The RCC’s warning follows the arrest of two South Sudanese fishmongers for allegedly spearheading a fight against their colleagues on Wednesday.

Emmanuel Bwambale, the Arua District Police Commander identified the two who are currently detained at Arua Central Police Station as Abraham Mawut Kuol and Simon Mabior Yak.

The fight over the ownership of the South Sudanese fish market is between the leadership of the South Sudanese Fish Traders’ Association and the Leudier and Goi Fish Traders’ Union.

Addressing the members of the press in his office in Arua City yesterday, Ezama said they are waiting for the Resident State Attorney to sanction the file for the two South Sudanese before producing them in court.

Ezama cautioned the South Sudanese who do business in the area to avoid being used politically or risk being deported with immediate effect.

“The South Sudanese who want to interest themselves in local politics, we are going to deport them. I want to assure you. Me, I am a different person. We are going to call the migration department to come here and we need to verify some of these people, others might be deported. If you have come for business interest, you must abide by the laws of this country,” said Ezama.

The RCC said their role is to sensitise and mobilise masses to embrace government programmes such as the Parish Development Model [PDM], which is considered a game changer in the fight against household poverty.

“The market belongs to the government, it is not for individuals, it is not even for Sudanese alone. We welcome them to come and trade with the locals but they should have a conscious discipline, observing the laws of this country and respecting the decisions of the security committees,” Ezama said.
