Amuru RDC suspends activities on disputed land

AMURU-Stephen Odong Latek, the Amuru Resident District Commissioner has suspended any activities on the contested 1,500 acres of land in Kidimon village, Lakang Sub-county, Amuru district.

The suspension of the activities on the said land being used for commercial farming, came after some of the members of the community and officials of Lamogi Chiefdom disputed the ownership.

Particularly, Edward Openy, Martine Oyet, and Ker Kal Kwaro Lamogi accuse Stephen Inyang and Patricia, a daughter to the late Margaret Akumu of illegally using the disputed land.

Latek said he stopped activities on the said land until after the rightful owner of the land is established by court, adding that only court could order the resumption of the activities on the contested land.

Martine Oyet, a resident of the area says despite RDC`s directives, the accused people have reportedly continued to use the disputed land. “Up to now tractors and bulldozer machines are continuing to work in the gardens,” Oyet said.

When contacted, Stephen Inyang said a series of meetings were ongoing with Ker Kwaro Lamogi and other parties interested in the land.

Michael Lakony, the Amuru district LCV Chairperson warned that working with impunity and disobedience by parties claiming the land should cease.

Amuru district has seen a series of land ownership-related disputes in the recent past including the Lakang Sugar project which saw billions of shillings spent on compensation while scores were injured as sides fought. The Apaa land dispute is yet to be settled.
