Amuru locals donate land for construction of modern market

AMURU-Residents of Lajalula, in Lakang Sub-county in Amuru district, have donated four acres of land for the establishment of a modern market where farmers’ agricultural produce and other goods will be sold.

Traders in Lajalula had for long been operating without proper market facilities, with vendors erecting makeshift structures in order to accommodate them.

Jamecy Odoch Mudoch, the Lakang Sub-county district councilor confirmed to this reporter the latest development, saying the sub-county will take up the responsibility of constructing the market.

Odoch said that this is part of a bigger plan to bring marketing services closer to the community members as well widen the local revenue basket for the sub-county.

Anthony Oringa, the LCIII chairperson of Lakang Sub-county confirmed the development, saying that the next plan is to improve the road network to ease accessibility to the market.

According to Oringa, plans are underway to secure more land for establishment of modern markets, especially in Te-Okuttu trading centre, which hosts one of the biggest weekly markets in the district.

Jenifer Ayero, a resident of Lajalula says that vending at the temporary make-shift structures has been very challenging due to the unpredictable weather patterns, Ayero said that on several occasions, vendors have lost their goods to heavy rains because of lack of proper shades.

Denis Odongpiny, another vendor called for the construction of the market to take off immediately, saying that several people have gone out of business because of the unfriendly situation, which has left some vendors incurring losses.

“The construction of the market should take immediate effect because I can tell you, we lost several people who were doing business because rains would come and destroy goods on sale,” Odongpiny said.

According to Odongpiny, one of the priorities that should be worked on is improving the road network in order to boost business in the market.

“Currently, the road to Lajalula market is very bad that even if it was to be constructed, it would not make any much business sense, because we have lost businesses due to the poor infrastructure,” Odongpiny said.
