Alebtong youth benefit from Shs 69mln piggery project
ALEBTONG, May 25, 2024 – A Shs 69 million piggery project expected to boost the livelihoods of the youth in Alebtong district has been launched.
The project is an initiative of Dr. Mercy Faith Lakica, Secretary for Female Affairs of the Alebtong District National Youth Council, and other well-wishers.
According to Lakica, they intend to give two piglets to each of the 68 parishes of Alebtong. It is expected that in the next three months, the piglets will start multiplying so that more are distributed at the village level.
Lakica explained that the idea of bringing the piggery project is to keep the youth engaged in productive activities so that they can earn an income, calling upon the youth to have a positive attitude towards work.
“This will mark the beginning of empowerment of our youth. We don’t want our youth to be idle. Government has initiated programmes, some have failed, and some have succeeded and the problem is with the mindset of the people, which needs to be worked if they are to benefit from such programmes,” she said.
She urged the youth to take good care of the piglets so that they can multiply, warning that they would monitoring of the progress of the piggery project.
On their part the youth expressed excitement about the project, saying it will lead to their socio-economic transformation.
For instance, Caesar Ongom, a resident of Adwir parish said they would feed the piglets so that they grow fast and multiply.
On his part, Ronald Okello, a resident of Abaku Sub-county applauded those who initiated the project, saying that what is needed is to manage the piglets well so that they can multiply.
“These piglets will yield us fruits, because it is real piglets, it’s not money that some group leaders can always misuse the money,” Okello said.
Meanwhile Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, the Lango Paramount Chief-elect asked the youths to fight poverty and become self-reliant.
“Let’s make poverty our first enemy. Do not make poverty your friend. Engage in productive activities so that you can develop and if you do so, it will definitely bring glory to our culture,” Okune said.
Paulino Ogwal, the Alebtong District Senior Labour Officer who doubles as the Youth Livelihood Programme coordinator urged the youth to take the piggery project seriously if they are to resp big from it.
“If the youth are committed and they take up the piggery project seriously, they should be able to benefit from it,” Ogwal said.
