Acan Kwete Farmers’ Co-operative Society gets storage facility

OTUKE-The Minister for Northern Uganda, Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny has commissioned a storage facility for Acan Kwete Farmers’ Co-operative Society in Olilim town council, Otuke district.

The farmers’ storage facility constructed for bulking at a cost of Shs 134 million has the capacity to store 100 metric tons of produce.

The facility was constructed under Development Initiative for Northern Uganda [DINU] with funding from the European Union [EU].

Minister Kwiyucwuny called upon the farmers to applaud the government and the EU for funding the construction of the facility saying it would improve their business.

She encouraged farmers to engage in more production, saying that the land is fertile.

“Our problem right from the onset is that we are not producing enough yet we have fertile land and able-bodied people,” Kwiyucwiny said.

She said many people are still trapped in subsistence farming where little of the produce is reserved for family consumption.

“Our problem is we are not doing enough. We are still in subsistence farming and we even sell without determining how much should be reserved for the family,” she said.

She said the government has started mobilising farmers with 50 acres of land and above to engage in commercial farming. She said northern Uganda has enough land for commercial agriculture.

One of the members of the cooperative society said the storage facility would boost the production and marketing of their produce.

Pamela Kabahesi, the national programme coordinator for DINU in the Office of the Prime Minister, said the DINU programme intervenes in three key areas of food security, infrastructure, and good governance implemented in Lango, Acholi, West Nile, and Karamoja sub-regions.

The EU delegation, DINU Focal Point person, Celihe Lhoste, said the storage facility would have a positive impact on the lives of farmers in the district.
