Envoy enthroned as Lango clan leader

KOLE – Uganda’s ambassador to Khartoum, Dickson Ogwang Okul has been enthroned as leader of one of the 152 clans in the Lango sub-region.

Ogwang, who is in charge of D`Affairs at Khartoum mission and also the former United States Deputy Head of Mission was enthroned by Lango Paramount Chief Won Nyaci Yosam Odur as clan leader of Pala Ocol at Kuluyago village in Ayer sub-county, Kole district.

The Paramount Chief, Odur called on the cultural heads to work toward fighting early marriage, teenage pregnancy, defilement, poverty and illiteracy among their subjects who have eroded the cultural values.

“I want you to work with everyone regardless of religion or political affiliation to promote girl child education, fight child marriage and illiteracy,” the Chief says.

The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development who is also Oyam South legislator Betty Amongi also delivered a congratulatory message passed on by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.

She said Okul’s ascension to the position is a clear testimony of exceptional abilities as a leader, negotiator, counsellor and a uniting factor.

“The office of the cultural leader does not only offer an opportunity to be custodian of heritage but also a platform to galvanize efforts towards transforming people,” she added.

Minister Amongi said, culture is among the three pillars (politics, finances and culture) which set the foundation of human development.

“We are in the third pillar because culture molds the community, makes laws to shape up people and guides the community to develop,” she said.

Amongi advised people to promote culture for tourism, generate finances and act as an identity.

“The foundation of this country is on cultural leadership because if the clan has not developed, it would be uneasy for the government to come and provide for every household,” he added.

Amongi added that in Mexico, they generate a lot of money because every year they organize cultural festivals which attract 20 million people across the globe.

Ambassador Ogwang who is the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diplomacy in the cultural institution said, cultural institutions could no longer afford to only be custodian of traditions and rituals but they must inspire and change people.

He said his interest has always been to contribute towards conflict resolution, peace building and development of the sub-region.
