Oyam councillors urged to join newly registered leaders’ SACCO

OYAM, October 19, 2026 — Councillors in Oyam district at both district and lower local government levels have been urged to join the newly established Oyam district Local Government Leaders SACCO to improve their welfare and promote financial independence.

The call was made during a recent district council meeting by the Speaker of Oyam District Council, Easy Bash Mashar, who told councillors that the SACCO had been registered and was open to all local government leaders across the district.

Mashar said the cooperative would promote savings, collective investment and access to affordable credit among leaders, reducing their reliance on commercial banks, which often charge higher interest rates.

“Members will be able to borrow from their own savings through the SACCO and access cooperative financing at lower interest rates compared to commercial lenders,” Mashar said.

The LC5 Councillor representing Acaba Subcounty, Chris Ongom, welcomed the initiative, saying leaders should lead by example in wealth creation through farming, savings and cooperative development.

He said communities were more likely to embrace cooperatives when they saw their leaders actively participating in them.

Ongom added that government wealth-creation programmes were increasingly encouraging collective investment and organised savings groups as pathways to economic transformation.

Meanwhile, the Female Councillor for Minakulu Subcounty, Monica Okoi, described the SACCO as a timely intervention that would enable councillors to access funds for personal and development needs.

She encouraged fellow councillors to join the cooperative and work together to improve their livelihoods.

Under the membership requirements, each councillor will be required to purchase at least five shares, each worth Shs 100,000, and pay a one-off membership fee of Shs 30,000 to join the SACCO.
