Yumbe cocoa cooperative receives support from Turkish agency to boost productivity

YUMBE, June 12, 2026 — Yumbe District Cocoa Cooperative Limited has received a donation of essential agricultural equipment and inputs from the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency [TİKA] aimed at increasing crop productivity and enhance farmers’ incomes.

Items handed over to the rural cooperative included excavation machine, wheelbarrows, gumboots, cocoa seedlings, tarpaulins, and bicycles, among others, during an event held recently at Sese Grounds in Yumbe district headquarters.

TİKA operates in 22 African countries, including Uganda, where it partners with both the private sector and government institutions on various initiatives such as education and skills development, healthcare infrastructure, community empowerment and agricultural mechanisation.

While handing over the items, TİKA’s Country Coordinator and Director in Uganda, Murat Çetin, said the intervention in the cocoa sector is intended to help farmers improve yields and strengthen their livelihoods.

“Our goal is simple: to empower cocoa growers with the tools they need to improve harvests and secure a brighter future for their communities,” Çetin said.

The Assistant Resident District Commissioner for Yumbe, Rashid Kawawa, praised the TIKA for the support, saying it complements government efforts to transition Ugandans into the money economy.

“This support from TİKA supplements government efforts to transform Uganda into a money economy, and I encourage other partners to emulate this generosity,” Kawawa said.

He further appealed to private sector actors to work together in advancing economic transformation across the country.

Yumbe Woman Member of Parliament, Avako Melisa Naima Gule, urged members of the cooperative to remain united and make effective use of the support received.

She said she would continue using her networks to lobby for more opportunities aimed at helping communities overcome poverty through greater participation in the money economy.

Meanwhile, the Cooperative Chairperson, Ismail Korobuga Azubu, welcomed the donation, describing it as a timely boost for cocoa farmers.

He said the planned cocoa factory in Koboko presents an opportunity for farmers to increase production, improve market access and strengthen household incomes if they prepare adequately.

“This support will help cooperatives become more organised and position us to benefit from the opportunities that will come with the cocoa factory currently under construction in Koboko,” Azubu said.
