Coffee exports earn Shs 756bln for Uganda in July 2026
According to the report, 71 percent of the total export volume was exported by the top 10 exporters, with UGACOF Ltd leading in terms of market share at 13 percent
KAMPALA, September 3, 2026 – Uganda exported a total of 846,376 60-kilogramme bags of coffee earning the much-needed foreign exchange of US$ 204.1 million [Shs 756 billion] in July 2026, according to the latest monthly coffee report published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF].
The report says this represented a decrease of 14.9 percent and 18.4 percent in quantity and value, respectively, compared to the same month last year.
The report projects Uganda’s coffee exports to reach 850,000 60-kg bags in August 2026, as the main harvest season in Greater Masaka and the South Western region has ended.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s coffee exports for the twelve months [August 2025-July 2026] totaled 8.2mln 60-kg bags worth US$ 2.13bln [Shs 7.7 trillion], compared to 7.9mln 60-kg bags worth US$ 2.25bln [Shs 8.2trn] in the previous year.
“This represents an increase of 3.4 percent in quantity and a decrease of 4.8 percent in value,” says the report.
According to the report, 71 percent of the total export volume was exported by the top 10 exporters, with UGACOF Ltd leading in terms of market share at 13 percent. A total of 74 companies performed during the month, compared to 66 companies in June 2026.
Italy Remains Top Destination for Uganda’s Coffee Exports
Italy remained the leading destination for Uganda’s coffee exports in July 2026, accounting for 29.3 percent of the total market share, although this was a decline from 31.1 percent recorded in June.
Sudan followed with 15.1 percent, up from 12.9 percent, while Germany’s share increased to 10.7 percent from 7.9 percent. Morocco accounted for 5.9 percent, compared to 5 percent in June, while India’s share declined to 4.1 percent from 6.5 percent.
The top 10 destinations collectively accounted for 78.6 percent of Uganda’s coffee exports, a slight increase from 78.3 percent the previous month.
Europe continued to dominate Uganda’s coffee export market, accounting for 62 percent of total imports in July, unchanged from June.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s coffee exports to African markets increased to 201,421 bags, representing a 24 percent market share, up from 158,651 bags or 21 percent in June. African destinations for Uganda’s coffee included Sudan, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Cape Verde, Kenya and Nigeria.
Coffee development activities during July
The report says Uganda’s coffee subsector continued to advance through investments in farmer capacity building, extension services, market readiness and regulatory oversight, with a focus on improving productivity, quality, traceability and sustainability across the value chain.
“During the month of July, 129 farmer training sessions reached 4,279 farmers. The training focused on Good Agronomic Practices [GAPs], traceability, and coffee marketing. A further 197 farm visits supported more than 995 farmers, providing tailored technical guidance on coffee establishment and rehabilitation, post-harvest handling, and climate-resilient production practices,” says the report.
Global situation
The report says world coffee production for 2026/27 is forecast to increase by 10.8 million bags from the previous year to a record 189.7 million bags, driven by record output in Brazil, Ethiopia, Uganda and Vietnam.
“These gains more than compensate for losses in India and Indonesia,” says the report.
World coffee exports are forecast to increase by 11.9 million bags to a record 131.4 million bags, driven by these output gains.
Global consumption is expected to rise to a record 179.7 million bags, with the largest gains occurring in the European Union and the United States. Ending stocks are expected to rise for a second consecutive year to 26.3 million bags, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Coffee: World Markets and Trade report for July 2026, as quoted in the report.
