Finance leader elected patron as Royal African Society marks 125th anniversary
For the Royal African Society, Prof. Oramah’s Patronage comes at a particularly significant moment and deepens its focus on Africa’s economic transformation, creative industries, and global partnerships
LONDON, April 28, 2026 — The Royal African Society has unanimously elected Prof. Benedict Okey Oramah as its second Patron at an Extraordinary General Meeting, as the organisation celebrates its 125th anniversary.
Prof. Oramah, a prominent economist and development finance leader, joins the Society at what it described as a pivotal moment in its history. He previously served as President and Chairman of the African Export–Import Bank from 2015 to 2025, overseeing a decade of expansion that elevated the institution’s role in African trade finance.
His work has earned international recognition, including Forbes Africa Person of the Year and multiple African Banker of the Year awards. Across government, finance and industry, he is widely regarded as a key architect of modern African trade finance systems.
During his tenure at the bank, Oramah led major initiatives aimed at strengthening the continent’s financial and trade infrastructure. These included the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System and the Intra-African Trade Fair, alongside programmes designed to support industrialisation and the creative economy. He also played a role in deepening economic links between Africa and its global diaspora.
The Society said his appointment would reinforce its focus on Africa’s economic transformation, cultural industries and international partnerships. It added that his experience aligns with its mission to promote informed engagement between Africa and the wider world.
Arunma Oteh, chairperson of the Society, said the election reflected a commitment to working with leaders shaping Africa’s economic future.
“Prof. Oramah’s exceptional experience, global perspective, and longstanding commitment to pan-African cooperation will significantly strengthen our work and broaden our impact,” she said.
The Society said Oramah’s patronage would support its strategic priorities, including advancing dialogue on trade, investment, cultural exchange and global partnerships.
