Uganda drives Africa’s coffee exports in December 2025-new report

According to the report, Uganda’s growth appears structural, with exports on a sustained upward trajectory since mid-2023/24

KAMPALA, February 12, 2026 — Exports of all forms of coffee from Africa increased by 13.3 percent in December 2025 to 1.32mln bags, up from 1.16mln bags in December 2024, according to the latest Coffee Market Report January 2026 released by the International Coffee Organisation [ICO].

The report says the December expansion was largely driven by Uganda, whose coffee exports rose by 52.5 percent to an estimated 0.63mln bags from 0.41mln bags a year earlier.

“Uganda’s exports have been on a sharply rising trajectory since mid-2023/24, breaking through the 7.0–8.0mln bag range for the first time in coffee year 2024/25, when they reached 8.26mln bags. This growth has been supported by increased production, high international coffee prices, and higher stock drawdowns,” the report states.

Meanwhile, in December 2025, global green bean exports totalled 10.15mln bags, up 9.2 percent compared with 9.3mln bags in December 2024. Performance across the four groups was mixed: exports of the Other Milds and Robustas increased, while shipments of the Brazilian Naturals and Colombian Milds declined.

On the other hand, Green bean exports of Robustas rose by 26.5 percent to 4.5mln bags in December 2025, up from 3.56mln bags in December 2024, driven primarily by Vietnam, whose shipments increased by 31.1 percent to 2.72mln bags. Indonesia and Uganda also recorded strong growth, with exports rising by 58.4 percent and 50.6 percent, respectively.

These gains were partly offset by Brazil, where Robusta exports fell by 51.8 percent to 0.22mln bags. Overall, the pattern is consistent with Robusta trends observed in coffee year 2024/25, characterised by declining Brazilian shipments and strengthening exports from Indonesia, Uganda and Vietnam.

According to the report, Uganda’s growth appears structural, with exports on a sustained upward trajectory since mid-2023/24. Shipments reached a record 7.32mln bags in 2024/25, supported by rising production, high international prices and increased stock drawdowns.

Under the Coffee Roadmap, Uganda has set an official production target of 20mln bags by 2030. In the cases of Vietnam and Brazil, the sharp year-on-year changes largely reflect a normalisation rather than a structural shift.

Global

Global exports of all forms of coffee increased by 10.5 percent to 11.94mln bags in December 2025, compared with 10.81mln bags in December 2024. Export volumes expanded in three of the four regions, with South America the only region recording a downturn.

Green exports

Green beans remained by far the largest form of coffee exported, accounting for 85.2 percent of total exports in the first three months of coffee year 2025/26. Soluble and roasted coffee represented 14.4 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively.

Soluble coffee exports

Total exports of soluble coffee increased by 19.5 percent in December 2025 to 1.74mln bags from 1.46mln bags in December 2024. Vietnam, Brazil and Indonesia were the largest exporters of soluble coffee in December 2025, shipping 0.66mln bags, 0.28mln bags and 0.27mln bags, respectively.

Exports of roasted beans fell by 14.0 percent in December 2025 to 0.047mln bags, compared with 0.044mln bags in December 2024.
