Obua urges clerics to mobilise the faithful for govt programmes

ALEBTONG, October 7, 2024: Denis Hamson Obua, the Government Chief Whip, has urged religious leaders in Alebtong district to actively mobilise the faithful for the Parish Development Model [PDM] and Emyooga programmes.

Obua emphasised that the two government initiatives are essential for fostering economic transformation and called on clerics to play a pivotal role in educating their congregations about the programmes designed to alleviate poverty in the households.

His remarks were made during a recent ceremony at the Alebtong district headquarters, where 510 iron sheets were donated by the Prime Minister’s Office. Alanyi Catholic Parish, Ajuri Anglican Archdeaconry, and the Pentecostal Church of Uganda [PCU] received the sheets to roof their church buildings.

Regarding the PDM, Obua noted that Alebtong district has 69 parishes, with an expectation that 200 people from each parish will benefit from the third phase of fund disbursement.

“As religious leaders, you have a greater influence over your congregations than we, the politicians do. I urge you to incorporate discussions about wealth creation and economic transformation into your sermons,” Obua stated.

He also encouraged locals to adopt the four-acre farming model promoted by President Museveni, which advocates for commercial agriculture. This model includes planting coffee, rearing dairy cattle, growing grass, and cultivating other crops such as bananas, with each project utilising one acre.

“As a political leader, I have already planted coffee, and my next steps will include expanding into poultry and dairy farming. I cannot simply listen to President Museveni advocate for the four-acre model without implementing it myself as a leader,” said Obua.

He stressed that religious leaders should set an example by adopting the four-acre model before encouraging their congregations to do the same.

David Kennedy Odongo, the Alebtong district LC5 Chairperson, echoed Obua’s sentiments, urging clerics to lead the charge in mobiliing their communities for government programs, given the persistently high levels of poverty in the district.
