Buliisa health centre gets over Shs 300mln multi-purpose ward

The construction of the ward was financed by Buliisa district Woman Member of Parliament, Norah Bigirwa Nyendwoha.

BULIISA, July 29, 2024 – Health workers at Biiso Health Centre IV and residents in Buliisa district have a reason to smile after the construction of over Shs 300 million multi-purpose ward expected to provide more space to patients.

The construction of the ward was financed by Buliisa District Woman Member of Parliament, Norah Bigirwa Nyendwoha.

Jonan Alinaitwe, the in-charge of Biiso Health Centre IV commended MP Bigirwa, saying that the new ward is a big relief given that the first ward was meant to have 15 beds but has been accommodating over 35 patients.

“You would find patients sleeping on the floor, others on the veranda. Women, men, and children have been sharing the first ward which has no privacy, and this has been forcing some people not to come to the facility to seek medication, so the construction of this ward has come at the right time,” said Alinaitwe.

He noted that the new ward will help the health worker to treat the patients without interruption.

He expressed concern that Biiso Health IV hosts high numbers of patients, despite the facility facing the challenges of inadequate staff, and space to accommodate patients.

He added that they also lack an ambulance, adding that he uses his private car to transport patients to referral hospitals.

Jane Murungi, a resident of Biiso who was attending to a patient at the facility expressed excitement about the the new ward, saying patients have been having the challenge of lack of accommodation at the health facility.

She noted congestion at the first ward posed danger to patients as they risked getting contagious diseases.

On her part, MP Bigirwa said she was forced to construct a 28bed  ward after realising congestion at the health facility, although she noted there more challenges such as lack of anesthetic machines, and low staffing, which she said derails health service delivery at the facility.

While commissioning the ward days ago,  State Minister for Works and Transport [Transport], Fred Byamukma commended the MP Bigirwa for supporting the construction of the ward, adding it will address the challenge of limited space which has been a big challenge at the health facility.

He pledged that government was looking for funds to improve the infrastructure at the health centre.
