World Bank’s Shs 4bln satellite lab in Lira City nears completion

The laboratory will house examination, microbiology, chemistry, and tuberculosis units, among others

LIRA CITY, October 31, 2024 — The World Bank-funded satellite laboratory project at Lira Regional Referral Hospital, valued at Shs 3.9 billion, is nearing completion.

Launched in 2023 as part of the Uganda COVID-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Project (UCREPP), the facility established in Lira City has reached a progress level of 96 percent and is set to be handed over for use this December.

During a recent media tour of the new facility, Aggrey Kentaro, the clerk of works, reported that the project began in February 2023. Although initially scheduled for completion in 15 months, delays prompted the Ministry of Health to extend the contract duration.

“The 15 months elapsed in April, and we have added four more months. As of now, our estimation shows that the work is nearly 96 percent complete, and I believe we will finish within two weeks,” said Kentaro.

The laboratory will house examination, microbiology, chemistry, and tuberculosis units, among others.

Dureen Nshabohurira, Communication Officer for the Uganda COVID-19 Response and Emergency Preparedness Project, noted that a similar project is underway at Port Fortal Regional Referral Hospital. “The goal is to establish this laboratory so that physicians and health workers can effectively address the challenges we face,” she explained.

She encouraged the people of the Lango Subregion to utilise the new facility. “Remember, prevention is better than cure. If you experience any unusual symptoms, please visit Lira Regional Referral Hospital to access laboratory services and maintain your health,” she said.
