WFP commissions Shs 5. 5bln housing project for staff

KIKUUBE– The UN World Food Programme [WFP] has commissioned a Shs 5.5 billion housing project in Kyangwali Sub-county in Kikuube district to provide accommodation for its staff serving in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.

The project to take 10 months was commissioned by WFP Country Director, Abdirahman Meygag who said it will improve service delivery in the refugee camp and host communities.

Meygag said the project was initiated in 2019 after realising that their 23 employees were facing and still face several challenges as they travel over 200 kilometres every day to come to work in the refugee camp and go back to their homes.

He noted that the project was supposed to have started two years ago but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said providing WFP staff accommodation within the refugee settlement would enable them to commit more time to their work.

He noted that once the project gets completed, it would help the UN organisation to reduce the cost they have been incurring in transporting staff and repairing vehicles.

The WFP official said they are also implementing the same project in Yumbe district, adding that their efforts are aimed at promoting the health and safety of their workers.

WFP Engineer Emmanuel Kizito commended the Office of the Prime Minister for donating the land where the project is being established.

He noted that the project consists of 32 housing units with water reservoirs to hold 50,000 litres of water, and recreation facility, a solar plant, a water treatment plant, and a CCTV system to ensure safety of staff.

Kikuube district LCV chairman, Peter Banura commended the project, saying it will contribute to the development of the area.

He challenged the contractor to offer some jobs to local communities during the implementation of the project.

Peter Bisoborwa, the deputy resident district commissioner Kikube, commended the WFP for promoting the well-being of the refugees and participating in the development of the area

Kyagwali refugee camp commandant, Tophious Chali called the district leaders to own such a project because they belong to the district.

She challenged the contractor to expedite the project and produce quality work.

She noted the construction of the facilities is not only an achievement for WFP but also for the Office of the Prime Minister.
