West Nile leaders urge IG, SHACU to handle corruption cases diligently

ARUA-Political leaders in the West Nile region have urged the Inspectorate of Government [IG] and State House Anti-Corruption Unit [ SHACU ] to handle corruption matters in the country with consciousness.

They said though IGG and SHACU officials are doing their bests to fight corruption in the country, they should not base their arrests on false allegations, saying that some allegations against public officials are politically motivated.

The leaders echoed their grievances during West Nile regional Anti-corruption Dialogue, which took place in Arua City, following reports that rampant corruption had affected the services delivery in the region. The event organised by   Action Aid International Uganda [AAIU].

In June this year, some officials from the IG based in  Arua City arrested the chief administrative officer of Maracha district for allegedly failing to interdict four of his district officials implicated in the alleged mismanagement of Shs1.9 billion meant for the construction works of Kololo Seed Secondary School.

One of the leaders in the West Nile region, Yasin Matata Buga the resident district commissioner. Obongi district urged the anti-graft officials to always give taxpayers feedback if they are to get public trust as they handle corruption cases.

“Uganda must come up with an independent body to investigate the IGG officials since they have failed to give Ugandans positive feedback,” Buga said

Robinson Oduka, from the Directorate for Ethics and Integrity in the Office of the President, said corruption has affected service delivery in most government institutions.

He said SHACU officers should steer free of corruption if the public is to trust them with information.

He urged government to empower civil society organisations in the fight against corruption, saying government alone can not entirely eliminate the vice.

However, Jackson Kimah from IG Arua said a lot of money is being lost to corruption, urging the church to sensitise people about the dangers of the vice that has caused government to lose trillions of shillings annually.

The Terego district LCV chairperson, Saka Wilfred, the IGG urged IGG officials to exhibit a high level of professionalism but not make arrests based on false allegations.

“Terego district has become a hot spot for IGG where officers have been arrested on rumor,” Saka said, urging the anti-graft officials to investigate corruption cases in the central government as well.
