WCUC concludes in Sydney with global call for connection and collaboration
SYDNEY, July 28, 2026 — More than 2,400 credit union and financial cooperative leaders from 39 countries have concluded the 2026 World Credit Union Conference [ WCUC ] following four days of keynote presentations, educational sessions and global collaboration focused on strengthening the cooperative finance movement.
Hosted by the World Council of Credit Unions [WOCCU] and Australia’s Customer Owned Banking Association [COBA], the conference brought together leaders from across the movement to explore the forces reshaping financial services and identify opportunities to better serve members and communities worldwide.
“The strength of the global credit union movement comes from our willingness to learn from one another, confront shared challenges and work together towards solutions,” said World Council President and CEO Paul Treinen. “The ideas and relationships built this week in Sydney will help credit unions remain relevant, resilient and ready to meet the changing needs of their members and communities around the world.”
Before Wednesday’s general session, former WOCCU Board Chair Michael Lawrence formally welcomed Joe Thomas as the organisation’s new board chair during a ceremonial transfer of leadership.
“I want to thank you for all you do for your credit unions and leagues, and for your support and unwavering commitment to our shared vision. Together, let us forge a brighter future for our members and the communities we serve around the globe,” said WOCCU Board Chair Joe Thomas.
Wednesday’s general session featured Freddie Ravel, an internationally recognised musician, speaker and producer known as the Keynote Maestro.
In his keynote address, Life in Tune: Strategic Harmony for High-Performance Teams, Ravel combined live music with insights on leadership, communication and organisational performance. He encouraged attendees to listen more intentionally, align their teams around a shared purpose and recognise the role human connection plays in building strong organisations.
“Music is the oldest language on the planet… The structure of music is connected to success by virtue of all of us having a heartbeat. There is a drummer living in every single one of us,” said Ravel.
Wednesday’s programme also marked 25 years of the World Young Credit Union Professionals Program [WYCUP], highlighting its impact in developing emerging leaders and strengthening professional networks across the global credit union movement.
Throughout the conference, attendees participated in sessions addressing leadership, digital money, cross-border payments, cybersecurity, regulation, financial inclusion, emerging professionals and the future of cooperative finance.
WCUC concluded on Wednesday evening with a closing party overlooking Sydney Harbour, where attendees gathered for live entertainment, food and a final opportunity to connect with colleagues from around the world.
The celebration marked the end of a week focused on exchanging ideas, strengthening international partnerships and advancing a shared commitment to serving members and communities through the cooperative model.
The next World Credit Union Conference will be held from July 25-28, 2027 in Dublin, Ireland.
