WB project targets 60,000 entrepreneurs in Lango

LIRA, December 27, 2023 – The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development [MGLSD] is targeting to recruit 60,000 women entrepreneurs in Lango Sub-region to benefit from the US$ 217 million [Shs 800 billion] World Bank-funded project.

The project, Generating Growth and Opportunities for Women [GROW] aims to enhance women’s economic empowerment in Uganda, according to MGLSD Commissioner Labour, Industrial Relations and Productivity, Alex Asiimwe.

“It is a five year project focusing on enhancing entrepreneurs’ services and it will end on December 31, 2027,” Asiimwe said recently at Mayor`s Garden in Lira City during an engagement and exhibition of different products produced by women entrepreneurs.

The exhibition which was organised by MGLSD in partnership with Northern Uganda Women`s Network for Business and Private Sector Foundation Uganda aimed at enabling entrepreneurs across Lango Sub-region showcase their products.

“GROW project will help them to grow their [women] businesses. The women entrepreneurs can access skills, finance and then infrastructures, particularly the common user facilities to be constructed,” he added.

Minster Betty Amongi who graced a one day exhibition asked women entrepreneurs to apply for the funds, saying the funding portfolio ranges from Shs 18 million  to Shs 200mln.

“My message is that this programme is the Government of Uganda programme and it has been brought to support women in business and it is demand driven, so I want to request women to organise themselves so that they benefit,” she said.

She added that government will also develop online marketing services to help the women sell their products in Uganda and overseas.

The project launched early this year is expected to reach 1.2mln women in the country within a period of five years.
