JINJA, January 30, 2024 – The UPDF’s Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society [[WSACCO] has donated to Busoga communities items valued at Shs 50 million that included 20 hospital delivery beds, 600 mama kits and a pledge of 600 dozens of exercise books.
The items were delivered during the official launch of Tarehe Sita activities in Busoga Sub-region that took place days ago in Buyende district.
Tarehe Sita is a day celebrated to commemorate the launch the National Resistance Movement [NRM]/ National Resistance Army [NRA] struggle that culminated into the liberation of Uganda from the forces of tyranny on January 26, 1986.
This year’s celebration that marks the 43rd Tarehe Sita Anniversary will be held in Bugweri district on February 6, 2024. The anniversary is preceded by a week long activities that include among others construction, medical camps, cleaning of towns and trading centres.
While officiating at the launch of Tarehe Sita activities at Buyende District, the first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East Africa community Affairs, Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga lauded the UPDF for fulfilling its constitutional mandate of defending the sovereignty of Uganda and being pro people. She hailed WSACCO for the support rendered to the people of Busoga through the donation. She asked the people of Busoga to embrace the UPDF spirit.
The Chief Civil Military Cooperation, Brig Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande applauded WSACCO for the generous support accorded to the UPDF for extension to the community.
“We thank Wazalendo for not only offering financial services to it’s members but also having concern for the community. Your contribution will strengthen our efforts and enhance our efforts to give back to the community,” said Rwashande.
The Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lt Col. Allan Kiatanda who represented the Chairman WSACCO Board of Directors Maj Gen. Sam Kavuma asked the people of Busoga to form SACCOs and embrace saving and prudent investments if they are to overcome poverty.
He said that as the UPDF conducts its army week activities in Busoga Sub-region, WSACCO shall be offering free training to SACCOs of Busoga in a bid to improve the cooperative industry. He invited the leaders of the SACCOs in the region to embrace the training.
The CEO WSACCO, Col. Joseph Freddy Onata who handed over the donation to the UPDF noted that it was part of the SACCO’s Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR] function whose intention is to give back to the community.
“The spirit behind our giving is to appreciate the community where we operate and reside. This donation is an expression of our appreciation to the population for the strategic partnership with the UPDF. Particularly, this donation of delivery beds and Maama kits, is based on our understanding that safe motherhood promotes a health population. It’s from the same population that UPDF recruits members of the UPDF who constitute the bulk of our membership,” said Col Onata.
He noted that WSACCO’s CSR function focuses on critical sectors including health, education and environmental protection.
Onata urged other SACCOs in the country to have good governance and be transparent to their members if they are to excel. He pledged continuous support to the country’s SACCO sector through free training, benchmarking and sharing of experiences to the young and upcoming SACCOs.
The function was attended by among other government officials from Busoga region, the UPDF fraternity, and the general public.
