US: Worker-owned coffee coop aims to focus on community outreach and affordable costs

Founded by Rayan Saoud in collaboration with Co-op Cincy, this establishment aims to foster community engagement while offering affordable, quality coffee

CINCINNATI, May 20, 2026 — A new coffee shop, Radical Bean Cooperative, has opened in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati, promoting a unique worker-owned business model where all profits are reinvested into the employees and major decisions are made collectively.

Founded by Rayan Saoud in collaboration with Co-op Cincy, this establishment aims to foster community engagement while offering affordable, quality coffee. Previously known as Topia Co-Op, the shop transitioned to focus more on community outreach after Saoud reinvigorated the concept following the departure of his partners.

Saoud emphasises the importance of the coffee shop as a social hub, inspired by his upbringing where food served as a centerpiece for community gatherings. The shop aims to remain accessible to all, with a menu featuring ethically sourced single-origin coffee and various specialty drinks, all competitively priced. The business model encourages employee input, cultivating a sense of pride in their offerings.

With over a decade of experience in hospitality, Saoud appreciates the ethical framework the cooperative provides, allowing everyone involved to benefit from the business’s success. Following the example of popular local spots, he plans to expand evening activities that don’t center on alcohol, including game nights and community workshops.

Radical Bean Cooperative also extends its community efforts by supporting the Palestinian art group PALSHIELD and collaborating with local officials to enhance educational opportunities through workshops for students.

As Over-the-Rhine experiences rapid development, Saoud is committed to cultivating a sustainable community without displacing its long-time residents. His vision is to help develop the area responsibly, ensuring that existing tenants feel secure in their homes.

By creating opportunities and fostering a caring community spirit, Saoud hopes to enrich the lives of those around him while maintaining the neighborhood’s character. Overall, Radical Bean Cooperative exemplifies a model for ethical business practices in the coffee industry, intertwining social responsibility with quality service.
