Soldiers of Uganda People’s Defence Forces [UPDF] operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC] yesterday killed two rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces [ ADF ] and recovered two guns and 28 rounds of ammunition, according to the office of the Defense Spokesperson.
On November 30, 2021, the Congolese army [FARDC] and the UPDF launched joint Operation Shujaa in the Beni territory of the DRC against the ADF, an armed group from Uganda that has been operating in the DRC since the mid-1990s, causing havoc as well as killing innocent people both in eastern DRC and western Uganda.
“Yesterday, 4th July 2022, our forces had contact with the enemy in various sectors,” UPDF said in a press release on Tuesday.
Among other items the UPDF said it recovered on Monday are; two walkie-talkies, one generator, one solar panel, one voice tracker with a memory card, and three telephone sets.
Other items recovered include East African passport in the names of Monde Kasimu Muhanda, a Tanzanian, and DRC National ID belonging to Yuma Malipeka Kibamba.
UPDF said since the end of November 2021, there have been various victories and achievements towards the goals of Operation Shujaa.
Lat May, Parliament approved Shs 64.5 billion to facilitate the UPDF offensive operations in the DRC. It was part of the Shs 617.9billion Supplementary Schedule No.2 for Financial Year 2021/2022.
In May there were rumours that the UPDF would withdraw from the DRC at the end of that month, which the DRC government said would be “premature” since the heads of state had not discussed it.
In a tweet, the Commander of UPDF Land Forces and President Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, had said that the operation to fight the ADF rebels was to last six months and would therefore end on May 31, unless otherwise instructed.
However, in a second message on Twitter then, he clarified that the operation “will continue even for another six months if both Presidents Museveni and Tshisekedi decide to extend it.
The UPDF has deployed about 1,7000 in the DRC to fight the ADF that has disorganised communities in that country as the rebels, now considered terrorists, kill, rape and loot.
