UPDF destroys illegal fishing gear worth Shs 14bln in Apac district

APAC, 21 July 2025 — The Fisheries Protection Unit [FPU] of the Uganda People’s Defence Force UPDF recently destroyed illegal fishing gear worth Shs 14 billion at the Kayei Landing Site on Lake Kwania, Apac district.
The gear, which were confiscated over the course of more than two years, was seized from fishermen operating in various locations including Wansolo, Kiga, Apalamio in Apoi Sub-county, Kayei Landing Site in Akokoro Town Council, as well as Acholi Inn and Kampala Kagoi landing sites in Akokoro Sub-county.
Major Joseph L. Cherop, the FPU Intelligence Officer, said the destruction of the illegal equipment was part of ongoing efforts to combat unlawful fishing on Lake Kwania.
“When you consider what we’re about to destroy, items valued at over Shs 14 billion, that’s the equivalent of constructing around ten fully equipped hospitals or schools. It’s unfortunate that we are forced to destroy this, simply because of illegal fishing,” he stated during the exercise held earlier this month at Kayei Landing Site.
The operation was witnessed by the Apac District Security Committee, led by the Resident District Commissioner, Andrew Onyuk. He commended the UPDF and FPU for their efforts to restore order on the lake and regulate fishing activities.
“I cannot sympathise with the monetary value of this illegal gear being destroyed today. We stand united in support of the nation’s future, to protect and promote our fishing industry. Destroying this illegal gear is both necessary and lawful,” Onyuk said.
Apac district LC5 Chairperson, Asanti Odongo, urged fishermen to refrain from attacking soldiers on the lake, emphasising the risks such confrontations pose to both sides.
“I appeal to my people to stop resorting to violence unless someone tries to resist arrest. Use reasonable force, but avoid excessive beating or torture,” he advised.
Since 2018, the government has deployed the FPU on Lake Kwania to curb illegal fishing practices. The UPDF continues to conduct lake patrols and has established checkpoints along access routes to various landing sites to monitor fishmongers and enforce compliance.
