Unyama Irrigation Scheme construction to commence July

AMURU – The construction of the Unyama Irrigation Scheme along River Unyama in Amuru district is expected to commence in July this year to boost agricultural production.

According to the government, three irrigation schemes including Unyama, Sipi, and Namalu, will be constructed in the financial year 2023/2024 courtesy of a partnership with Islamic Development Bank.

The construction of the irrigation schemes under the Ministry of Water and Environment is expected to consume Shs 43 billion as disclosed recently in Mbale during the national launch of the construction of the three irrigation schemes.

Speaking to this reporter days ago, Michael Lakony, the Amuru district LCV chairperson said land for Umanya Irrigation Scheme has been secured. The irrigation scheme is planned to cover Opara, Pabbo, Patiko, and Attiak subcounties that lie along River Unyama in Amuru district.

On her part, Sharon Laker Balmoi, the Gulu district Woman Member of Parliament said the irrigation scheme will enhance the livelihoods of the locals, adding that they will have untampered access to water for farming, even during the dry season.

Meanwhile, The Ministry of Water and Environment and the Islamic Development Bank on April 6, 2023 published a Specific Procurement Notice (SPN) for Namula and Sipi irrigation projects with a deadline for submission of bid being May 30, 2023. This was further published in newspapers and on the Ministry websites.
