UNRA gives Lira City Shs 119mln to repair faulty streetlights

LIRA-The Uganda National Road Authority [UNRA] has given Shs 119 million to Lira City council to fix faulty streetlights installed under Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development [USMID] programme bankrolled by the World Bank.

The acting city council engineer, Freddie Owiny said the assessment is being done to establish the total cost of fixing the solar-powered faulty streetlights before they kick off with the work.

Most of the solar-powered streetlights that require repair, according to Owiny, are installed along Obote Avenue, Oyam road, Soroti road, Aroma Lane, and Oyite Ojok Lane among others.

Under USMID programme, 292 solar panels were installed on tarmacked roads but 160 are now non-functional, posing security threats in some parts of the city during the night.

Last year, Julius Peter Ocari, the finance, planning, investment, and administration committee chairperson Lira, City said over Shs 300mln was needed to work on the streetlights.

Owiny said on Wednesday that the money given by UNRA is too little and will only help to fix only 60 streetlights in the City. “It requires over Shs 150mln so that we are able to work on the faulty lighting system,” Owiny said.
