University students urged to embrace govt programmes
FORT PORTAL: The Fort Portal Resident City Commissioner [RCC], Godwin Kasigwa Angalia has urged university students across the country to embrace government programmes, if they are to develop together with the rest of the Ugandan population.
Kasigwa said government programmes like the latest Parish Development Model [PDM] are meant to empower all Ugandans economically in order to get out of poverty.
“There are so many programmes that are meant to empower Ugandans economically, like youth livelihood, Emyooga and now the Parish Development Model and government is bringing more,” he said.
He said this over the weekend during the pass- out of 200 university students who underwent three days of patriotism training at Mountains of the Moon University in Fort Portal City.
Kasigwa said the training in patriotism was meant to empower the university student leaders to know more about their country and their responsibilities as the youth.
Brigadier General Patrick Mwesigye, the Commissioner for Patriotism in the Office of the President said the purpose of the patriotism training is to transform their mindset for their personal and national transformation.
“This course is usually good for people to raise their level of consciousness, to love their country and be able to analyse issues affecting them,” he said.
He said this course is to prepare them to be better people in the future because such people with transformed mindsets who will take over the affairs of this nation.
“These are high-level students who are completing their courses and soon they will be ushered in to work in the community in public life and the course is preparing them to become better civil workmanship,” he added.
The training was an opportunity for university student leaders from the four institutions in Rwenzori sub-region, which included Mountains of the Moon University, Uganda Pentecostal university, Fins Medical University, and Uganda Martyrs University Fort Portal campus.
Prof.Gilbert Kasenene, the Mountains of the Moon University Vice-Chancellor said such trainings are good for the university students because they prepare them to face the outside world.
Kasenene said there is a lot that is not done in class and that lessons delivered to students by people who are not lecturers impact students differently.
Dan Mujurizi, the Guild President Mountains of the Moon University said among the takeaways from the training, they can now engage themselves on how to participate in the social-economic transformation of the country, as well as taking advantage of the opportunities.
