UNBS moves to enforce food standards in schools

MBALE, October 11, 2023 – The Uganda National Bureau of Standards [UNBS] has directed schools in Eastern Uganda to purchase foodstuffs from only certified suppliers.

The UNBS made the call while training school managers on quality standards following the recent reports of food poisoning in some schools.

Sylvia Kirabo, Head of Public Relations and Marketing Department at UNBS, said schools need to have modern storage facilities that keep food in the best way possible.

Kirabo was days ago addressing hundreds of school heads from eastern Uganda at Mbale Resort Hotel in Mbale City.

Kirabo said the sensitisation follows the incident in which more than 150 students of  Nakanyonyi Senior Secondary School in Mukono district were hospitalised in July this year over suspected food poisoning, with police confirming it was contaminated.

“We are soon going to inspect all schools across the country to see how they store foodstuffs in their schools and which companies supply them with food. Any school which will be found poorly storing food and buying from unrecognised companies will be closed,” she said.

Sophia Munaba, the headteacher of Nansanga Seed School in Budaka district said the knowledge acquired from  the UNBS sensitisation will help schools to improve food storage.

He appealed to UNBS to close schools companies supplying food illegally. “We request UNBS to close food companies which have forged UNBS logs because it is hard for us consumers to identify,” she said.

Moses Odelwe, the Director of Link Child Nursey and Primary School in Mbale City urged UNBS to give schools more time so that they build modern food stores.
