UNBS elected to ARSO Council

KAMPALA– Uganda, through Uganda National Bureau of Standards [UNBS] has been elected to the African Regional Standards Organization [ ARSO ] as a member of the Board.

UNBS will be part of the ARSO 12 member Council/Board to represent 43 member countries. This was during the ARSO General Assembly Meeting held on June 30, 2022 in Younde, Cameroon.

The General Asembly was held under the theme: “The Standards We Want – African Union Agenda 2063 and African Continental Free Trade Area: “The Role of Standardisation and Conformity Assessment During a Journey of 41 Years”.

The theme emphasises on the need for harmonised standards and Conformity Assessment Regimes that “We Want”, for the seamless flow of goods and Services in a single Market under the AfCFTA Agreement, while facilitating global market access global trading systems and in meeting the Aspirations of Agenda 2063 and the UN 2030 SDGs,” said ARSO President Charles Booto à Ngon Charles.

The General Assembly composed of the organisation’s members is the supreme organ of ARSO and meets once a year to review the progress of the Organisation based on the Yearly Strategic Plans.

This Year’s [2022] General Assembly week runs from June 27 – July 1, 2022, focuses on a week-long event that review the progress of the organisation’s  programmes under the 2017-2022 Strategic Plan, since the 26th General Assembly (16th June 2021) and the Extra-Ordinary Meeting 27th ARSO General Assembly held on 7th October 2021, with forward-looking into the implementation of the ARSO 2022-2027 Strategic Plan.

Prior to the latest elevation, Uganda has been offering leadership in the organisationas Chairpersons and Secretaries to three Technical Committees of Horticulture, Cereals & Pulses and for Live Animals. Uganda also Chairs the ARSO Consumer Committee [COCO] and is a Member of ARSO Conformity Assessment Committee [CACO].

A number of Uganda Standards have also been used by ARSO as reference material for development of ARSO Standards.

As a Member of Council, UNBS will use its experience and expertise in Standardization to support the organisation in realizing aspirations of the African Continental Free Trade Area [AfCFTA], where we desire to have One Standard for One Market through harmonization of relevant standards to promote Intra-Africa Trade.

UNBS is responsible for the development, promotion and enforcing of national standards in order to ensure competitiveness of Ugandan products, protect the Health and Safety of the Public and the Environment against Harmful and Sub-Standard Products.
