KAMPALA, July 17, 2024 – Uganda’s coffee exports in 2023/24 were 6.13 million bags valued at US$ 1.144 billion [about Shs 4.23 trillion], Uganda Coffee Development Authority [UCDA] says in June 2024 report.
This was an increase of 6.33 percent in volume and 35.2 in value compared to fiscal year 2022/23 when exports were 5.8mln bags valued at US$ 846mln, says UCDA.
Meanwhile, coffee exports in June 2024, amounted to 667,037 60-kilo bags, worth US$ 162.36mln. The exports comprised 614,486 bags of Robusta valued at US $ 149.95mln and 52,551 bags of Arabica valued at US$ 12.42mln. “This was an increase of 18.24 percent and 79.14 percent in quantity and value respectively compared to the same month last year,” says UCDA
By comparing quantity of coffee exported by type in the same month of last year [June 2023], Robusta increased by 25.51 percent and 102.97 percent in quantity and value respectively, while Arabica exports decreased by 29.51 percent and 25.90 percent in quantity and value respectively.
“The monthly coffee exports volume was higher than the previous year and this was seen in Robusta exports as the newly harvested bigger crop from Greater Masaka and South Western regions reached the market. Arabica exports were however lower than last year due to a smaller harvest in Elgon region,” adds UCDA.
Outlook for July 2024
UCDA projects coffee exports to be 650,000 60-kilo bags, saying harvesting of the main crop south of the equator [Masaka and South Western regions] has peaked.
Coffee regulation effective
The Authority says due to effective regulation, the country’s coffee quality has greatly improved, resulting in farmers earning the highest prices in 30 years.
UCDA adds: “Uganda coffee is in high demand in global coffee market for its quality.
With the current trajectory, UCDA says the Coffee Roadmap target of 20mln 60–kg bags produced by 2030 is achievable.
The roadmap launched in 2017 by President Yoweri Museveni set a target for foreign exchange earnings of US$ 1.5bln annually from the 20mln bags.
